How the Mind Reading Number Trick Works
The Magic Square mind-reading illusion is powered by an algebraic invariant in our base-10 positional number system. While the player feels they have complete freedom to choose any two-digit number, the digit subtraction calculation funnels every possible choice into a predictable multiple of 9.
The Algebraic Proof in Three Lines:
1. Let any two-digit number be written as: 10a + b (with tens digit a ∈ 1..9, units digit b ∈ 0..9)
2. Sum of its constituent digits: a + b
3. Calculation: (10a + b) − (a + b) = 10a + b − a − b = 9a
Because the units digit b cancels out completely, the result is always exactly 9a (9 times the tens digit). Out of all 90 two-digit numbers (10 through 99), the only possible calculation outcomes are strictly:

Worked Example: Testing the Number 73
- Step 1: Think of the number 73 (tens digit a = 7, units digit b = 3).
- Step 2: Add its digits together: 7 + 3 = 10.
- Step 3: Subtract the sum from the original number: 73 − 10 = 63.
- Step 4: Check the algebraic formula: 63 = 9 × 7 (strictly a multiple of 9).
- Step 5: Look up 63 on the board. Its symbol matches every other multiple of 9, ensuring an exact prediction!

No, it is pure mathematics. Any two-digit number can be written as 10a + b. Subtracting its digits (a + b) leaves 9a, which is guaranteed to be a multiple of 9.
